not guilty {book review}

Not Guilty
By Teresa Pollard and Candi Pullen
the description on the back of the book reads:

It’s 1974 and Carrie Shepherd, daughter of the minister at Windspree Community Church, is a college senior with plans to be a missionary in Africa. Raped by a masked assailant, Carrie is so traumatized she tells no one until she realizes she’s pregnant. Refusing to have an abortion, she must find the courage to face her family, her fiance, her friends and a gossiping, angry congregation which may include her attacker.

i thought this was a well-written book. the trauma, emotions and events that happened feel very believable.  carrie’s world was shattered in an instant.  i did think that her parents reactions were a little less believable.  i know if my daughter was so severely upset everyday, i would push harder to find out what was bothering her.  carrie decided not to tell anyone about the rape even after finding out about the pregnancy, not wanting to deal with the shame. unfortunately, that was not a good decision.

if you’re looking for something a little different, Not Guilty is worth a read. i found it was a very easy, entertaining read.

i received this book free from the publisher through the BookCrash.com book review program, which requires an honest, though not necessarily positive, review.  the opinions i have expressed are my own.

life without Jesus

lately, i’ve had something on my mind quite a bit.  how do people without Jesus go through life? how do they face the problems we do and make it through? how do they handle loved ones deaths and make it through the sorrow?

lots of people do life without Jesus, including some Christians at times. i know there was one time in my life when i did not have time to be tied down with “Jesus rules”. i was busy living my worldly life. know what that got me in the end? lots and lots of pain and heartache.

as Christians, we press into Him when we’re joyful.  we seek His heart when we’re sad.  we ask for His direction when we’re confused.  we know friends may fail, people may mess up but Gods love will never fail us.  it never gives up.  and it always always wins.
but i can’t shake this question, how do people who don’t know Jesus make it through life’s trials?  where do they find comfort?  where do they run when their sad?  when people fail them, where do they go?
i can only come up with one explanation, to the world.  they run to the temporary, shiny comforts the world offers.  no matter how rich, intelligent, beautiful, or popular you are.  no matter how many friends you have.  no matter how much fun you’re having.  you will still not have the true joy and happiness that your heart longs.  your life is empty, and only Jesus can fill that emptiness.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6

i don’t want you to muddle through life, feeling hopeless and empty. that breaks my heart for you. i want you to feel the same joy i do. i want you to have the same promise i do. i want you to have that amazing feeling of relief after you pray. and i want you to have the comfort of knowing He will never, ever abandon you. ever.

we are so full of sin and pride but God still loves us. He loves us because He is merciful! you have to recognize that you can’t make payment for your sins. God sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins. He died for your sins. He was punished so you don’t have to be. Not only that; death did not defeat Him. after three days, Jesus rose from the dead, alive again!

He can see into the deepest depths of your heart and He knows exactly what it will take to restore Hope into your heart and into your life. He doesn’t wait for us to “clean up our act”. He meets us where we are and loves us just as we are, sinners. He showers us with his amazing grace. we have a God who knows how we feel, and really cares. He knows our doubts and hopelessness. He can help when we’re willing to bring those things to him. nothing is impossible for God!

your past might have shaped you but it doesn’t have to define you and hold you captive. don’t allow who you were to keep you from being what God wants you to be.
believe with all your soul, Jesus is there and has always been. He waits for us to find the simple truth and ask him to come into your heart and soul and then you know that HE is with you forever. sheer bliss and a fulfillment that is beyond any wonderful you have felt before.

with that said, will you make today the day that you accept Christ into your heart? take some time out of your day and talk to God and pray. confess that the Lord is God, and you are not. confess that you are broken and desperate, and in need of a Savior. tell Him. tell Him you believe that HE has risen from the dead and conquered death so that you might understand His power. ask Him to come into your heart. nothing on this earth is more important than this. this moment in time will change your life forever. Jesus can redeem you, He did it, because He loved you.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
