A Proverbs 31 Bible Study {Week 1}

Nearly four years ago I did a Bible Study here on the blog of the Proverbs 31 woman. I really enjoyed going through the study with y’all and learning all that I could. I thought this would be a great time to revisit the study and hopefully learn something new! Each Friday we’ll have a new post with a breakdown of a verse or two, until we make our way to the end. It’s 12 weeks, finishing up in early-summer.  We’ll also have some free printable art and study guides to follow along with. I’m so super excited to share this study with y’all.

I have striven, for years, to serve God in every aspect of my life. I’ve just always had this drawing to the Proverbs 31 woman and thought if I learned more about her, that would help me serve Him better. She seems to have it all together, doesn’t she y’all? She blesses her husband, manages her home, plants vineyards, weaves cloth, helps the poor, travels to the ends of the earth for good food and apparently never sleeps. She also is dignified, optimistic about the future, always wise and amazingly kind. I mean, it’s not like she was busy or anything.  I get tired just reading all she did.  She sure set the bar high.

In the meantime, here I am just muddling through. Trying to balance running kids, laundry, housework, meal prep, doctor appointments and family time. She seemed to just glide gracefully through her million things while I have a hard time juggling my few.

I want everything to be perfect. Perfectly perfect. I want to have the perfect balance, perfect marriage, be a perfect parent and run a perfect household. I want to be the proverbs 31 woman. I want to do it all and be it all.

Going through this study, I realized it’s not about be “perfect”. It’s about living life with purpose, diligence, priorities, forgiveness and repentance.

I have to say, Solomon is one of my favorite Bible authors. Song of Solomon is among my favorites as well, even having a tattoo of one of the verses on my back. So knowing that Solomon wrote Proverbs 31 made me excited and wanting to learn more!

Proverbs 31 is a beautiful poem of the characteristics of a virtuous woman and noble wife. While the book of Proverbs was written by Solomon, in Chapter 31 there is a new voice. It’s a mother’s voice.  Proverbs 31 is what is known as an acrostic. From verse ten, each line begins with the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet. It is poetry written by a loving mother to her son.  She is telling her son what to look for in his life partner. Solomon wrote the advice his mother, Bathsheba, had given him. Solomon wrote it using his pseudonym name, King Lemuel. It’s not just wisdom given from a mother to her son, it’s God’s Word. It’s what we, as women, are to attain to. What we should strive to be. Let’s read through it’s entirely before beginning our study.

A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
She gets up while it is still dark;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her servant girls.
She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
Give her the reward she has earned,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
Proverbs 31:10-31

This week we’ll begin our study on verse 10. It begins with A wife of noble character who can find?  The King James Version has this verse as Who can find a virtuous woman? So what would this wife of noble character look like? When we look up the definition of virtuous, it says having or showing high moral standards and chaste. The definition of noble says having dignity and elevation. The Hebrew word chayil, translated here “noble,” or “virtuous” (KJV), means a wife of valor — a strong, capable woman with strong convictions. So set your standards and morals high ladies.

A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.
Proverbs 12:4

The second part of verse 10 says She is worth far more than rubies. Isn’t that beautiful?  This virtuous woman is so rare that when you find her, she will be worth more to you than rubies.  What else do we know about rubies?  They are rare and hard to find.  We are not called to be women of the world, who are very easy to find. We are to be rare and hard to find. God attaches a pretty high value to this rare, virtuous woman.

She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
Proverbs 3:15

Don’t get discouraged when you read all the Proverbs 31 woman accomplished. It’s sure easy to do reading all that. But we need to remember these aren’t things she did all in one day. This is what she completed over her lifetime. She drew all her strength from God and He enabled her. She fixed her eyes on Him and never looked elsewhere. Wow, what an amazing example for us to follow!
While I was doing my study, I was searching around the internet and trying to learn all I could about this amazing lady. I was shocked at some of the opinions women had of her. I saw comments like “this passage is all about women being slaves to their household and that it’s chauvinistic”. I guess I shouldn’t be shocked, we do live in a fallen world. But I’ve always saw the virtuous woman as a beautiful woman that I want to strive to be.

This chickie is far from a Proverbs 31 woman but it sure is my heart’s desire to be one. I believe if you love God and you want to be a Proverbs 31 woman, you absolutely can. But the only way to do that is by fixing your eyes on Him. Get in His word and read it. Spend time with Him. It’s going to take some time and there will definitely be some bumps in the road. There will be lots of heart work God will need to do on us to develop our noble and virtuous character. And those moments might be ouchie. He sure does love you right where you are but He doesn’t want you to stay there, He has much better things planned for you.

Come back next Friday to continue our study on this amazing virtuous woman!

Uninvited {Book Review}

Uninvited By Lysa TerKeurst

About the book:

The enemy wants us to feel rejected . . . left out, lonely, and less than. When we allow him to speak lies through our rejection, he pickpockets our purpose. Cripples our courage. Dismantles our dreams. And blinds us to the beauty of Christ’s powerful love.

In Uninvited, Lysa shares her own deeply personal experiences with rejection—from the incredibly painful childhood abandonment by her father to the perceived judgment of the perfectly toned woman one elliptical over.

With biblical depth, gut-honest vulnerability, and refreshing wit, Lysa helps readers: • Release the desire to fall apart or control the actions of others by embracing God-honoring ways to process their hurt. • Know exactly what to pray for the next ten days to steady their soul and restore their confidence. • Overcome the two core fears that feed our insecurities by understanding the secret of belonging. • Stop feeling left out and start believing that “set apart” does not mean “set aside.” • End the cycle of perceived rejection by refusing to turn a small incident into a full blown issue.

There is nothing I love more than feeling as if I’m chatting with a friend over a cup of coffee while reading a book.  And this book was just that, from cover to cover.

I think as women, we’ve all felt Uninvited at one point in our lives.  God created women to crave deep personal relationships, so our friendships are a huge part of who we are. Chances are, right now you’re either smiling because you’re thinking about your own bestie or you’re feeling sad because you wish you had a bestie. Either way, your heart connects with the idea of friendship.

I remember a time last year where it felt as if I watched friendship after friendship roll across my Facebook feed. Gals going on lunch dates, littles play dates, meeting for coffee, selfies together here and there. And here I was, sitting at home taking selfies with my chickens.

Lysa tackles the emotional issues of rejection and loneliness in Uninvited. Time after time I found myself saying “Yes, oh my goodness, me too!”  She emphasizes that there is a reason for this season and it’s not to harm you.  Goodness, I should maybe get that tattooed on my arm.  Lysa discusses the damaging beliefs we so eagerly embrace and the hurtful ways we deal with those beliefs. She then offers us the truth and promises found in God’s Word.

Every person should read this book. It is such is a healing for the brokenhearted. God’s love for us is so real!  When we are in times of need, when we’re lonely and when we’re Uninvited He wants us to run to Him. To crave Him. To find comfort in the love story He wrote for us.

Meal Planning Monday

Meal Planning Monday is a really important part of my week.  And though it’s been on the blog for years, it’s going to have a few changes to it! Every Monday, I’ll still be sharing my weekly meal plan. I will also throw in a few breakfast, snack and dessert ideas! I hope these posts make it easier for you to get dinner on the table! And don’t feel like you have to make every single recipe…or on the exact day. For example, if you want to make Monday’s recipe on Thursday, go for it! Or if you want to only make two of the recipes during the week, perfect! These meal plans are meant to be a guide! Feel free to change the plans up to meet your needs!

Also, as we are eating low carb, most of the recipes I share will involve that.  These meals and recipes are easily adaptable and can be switched up for any meal plan your family follows.  Throw in a loaf of bread, a side of corn and an apple crisp and you’re all set.

To find the recipe, click on the link on the days post.  If the word is underlined, it includes a link to the recipe.  Just click on the underlined word and it will take you there.  I will also be including a printable recipe card every week of one of my own recipes!

If you make one of the recipes I share, take a picture and share on Instagram! Use the hashtag #foreverbelovedmeals so I can see what you are making in your kitchen! And don’t forget to follow me on Instagram!

HAPPY MEAL PLANNING!

Monday: BBQ Bacon Sushi and Grilled cabbage (printable recipe below) – the grilled cabbage is to die for and very seldom are there any leftovers.

Tuesday: Marinated Steak and Crispy Parmesan Zucchini Fries – with a great marinade, you’ll have tender juicy steak the entire family will love!  Just remember you need acids, fat and seasonings to make a great marinade.

Wednesday: Parmesan Crusted Chicken and Cheesy Cauliflower Gratin – this chicken is truly one of the best I’ve had.  To make it low carb, just omit the breadcrumbs.

Thursday: Rotisserie chicken (cooked in my rotisserie), Easy Cauliflower Gratin and a side salad – using a rotisserie chicken, it allows me to save the carcass for homemade chicken stock.

Friday: Crockpot Low Carb Unstuffed Cabbage Roll Soup – a yummy comfort soup easily thrown in your crockpot in the morning.  If you aren’t sure how to rice cauliflower, find detailed instructions here.

Saturday: Cauliflower Crust Stromboli – Saturdays are usually pizza day here.  With not many offering low carb options, we’ll be making our own with this yummy cauliflower crust.

Sunday: Breakfast for dinner is a favorite around here!  We’ll have bacon, sausage and eggs.

Grilled Cabbage
Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 2.5 hours
Servings
Ingredients
  • 1 head cabbage
  • 3/4 lb bacon cooked
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 2.5 hours
Servings
Ingredients
  • 1 head cabbage
  • 3/4 lb bacon cooked
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
Instructions
  1. Remove the core from the head of cabbage. You can do this by cutting around the core with a sharp knife, then slicing the core out.
  2. In a bowl, mix the softened butter, smoked paprika, garlic powder and cooked bacon pieces together. Mix all of these ingredients until they are incorporated well together.
  3. Stuff the butter mixture into the hollowed out section of the cabbage where the core was. Then place the cabbage in the center of a large square of heavy duty aluminum foil, core side up. Wrap the foil around the cabbage, creating a bowl of sorts, allowing the core to remain exposed. Pour the chicken broth over the cabbage around the core area.
  4. Place the cabbage, still core side up, on the grill. You want to use indirect heat for about an hour. After an hour, wrap the foil the rest of the way around the cabbage, securing it tightly. Then grill it for another hour and a half.
  5. Once the cabbage is cooked, place it in a large bowl. Start by cutting it into quarters and continue cutting until you have your desired size of pieces. Mix it up to incorporate the bacon and juices throughout. If there are juices left in the bottom of the foil, pour them over top and mix again.
