Glimpsing Grace in Ordinary Days {Book Review}

Glimpsing Grace in Ordinary Days
By Christine Litavsky

About this book:

Using true life stories from the author’s everyday life, Glimpsing Grace in Ordinary Days reminds us that God is always at work, even when it’s hard to see His hand in our daily routines. It helps readers pull out often-elusive glimmers of grace out of our chaotic world, examine them, and rest in the assurance that we are loved by God. Whether we’re struggling with a divorce, remodeling a kitchen, or chaperoning a field trip, glimmers of grace are there, free for the taking, but we do need to reach out and grasp them. This book helps us remember we can.

This book is set up with 11 chapters, more so used as ways to group the stories. Each chapter then broken down into small brief sections. These smaller sections make it easier to read, focus and be reminded how God is ever-present. This book contains stories from the authors life.

I enjoyed reading this book and could relate to many of the stories. I had a bit of a time “getting into it” but once I did, it was wonderful. I was a bit surprised that more scripture wasn’t used throughout it. Overall I think it is very well written with a great reminder message to “glimpse God’s grace in ordinary days”.

When asked why she wrote this book, Litavsky replied:

I wrote this book to encourage people to slow down and look for the glimpses of grace present in their lives. This self-reflection is not always easy — in today’s technology saturated world, we’re more distracted than ever. We rush about, texting in one hand while checking our emails with the other. This busyness and preoccupation hinders our relationship with Jesus. Not only are we not focusing on Him, but we’re also not seeing the grace notes that He lovingly inserts into our lives.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookCrash.com book review program, which requires an honest, though not necessarily positive, review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

10 Bible Verses for Your Weight Loss Journey

Losing weight isn’t easy.  Period.  Can I get an Amen?  But with Christ by our side, anything is possible.  How can we resist the cravings and temptations that surround us daily? With truth! Replace the lies you’ve believed about food with thoughts that reflect Biblical truth. Read the Bible and memorize verses that help you see yourself and your relationship to food truthfully. Absorb them into your soul. Store them near your heart so they’ll be there to encourage you when you face temptation. Together let’s look to the Lord and vow to press on toward our weight loss goals.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Philippians 4:13

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:31

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:  And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24

Cast all your cares on him, because he cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

It was such a beautiful morning for a walk.  After the children were off to school, we were heading on our walk, just him and I.  I was so excited it felt as though a butterfly was fluttering around in my belly.

Right before we were to head on our walk, a car issue happened that was less than ideal.  Although he had lots of car work ahead of him, he still agreed to walk with me.  As we set off, the tone of the walk quickly changed.

He was stressed, I got it.  The more steps we took and the further we walked, the more bitter words were exchanged.  Hurtful, cutting-to-the-bone words were exchanged.  Eventually, he turned around and went back, leaving me to finish the walk myself.

I’m not going to lie, I spent the first few moments alone stewing.  But then something happened, something that left me reeling.  God said “give it to me”.

Now if you know me, you know I am one grudge-holding, stubborn girl.  So for me to give up an argument is crazy talk!  Almost instantly, a song came to mind.

He’s able
He’s able
I know He’s able
I know my Lord is able to carry me through

With that song ringing in my head, the remaining bit of my walk with filled with singing and praying.  I chose respect, humbleness and kindness rather than anger, bitterness and harsh words.

The closer I got to home, the more nervous I became.  I didn’t want to fight.  I didn’t want what had just happened to repeat itself again.  I could see him under the hood of the car.  For a quick moment I thought of scurrying past him and just going inside.  But God had a different plan.  I could sense the tension as I walked closer to the vehicle.  I walked right up to him and, in my kindest humble voice asked if there was anything I could do to help.

That simple sentence changed the atmosphere.  I could see his face soften.  I could feel his sadness over hurtful words said.  I could watch the outcome be rewritten before me.

I chose respect.

I chose to give respect a chance because I am a Christian and try (emphasis on try) to follow the Bible’s teachings on how to live. An attitude of disrespect cuts into a man’s heart like a knife and twists the blade far beyond the moments of meanness from his wife.
I am learning to hate the way it feels to tear down my husband’s spirit, though I still catch myself in acts of disrespect at times. As I grow in my love for my husband, and God continues to humble me more and more each day, I am able to see the destruction more clearly and run from it.

Will you join me in showing your husband r-e-s-p-e-c-t in every situation?

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Proverbs 12:18
