the good girls guide to great sex {book review}

The Good Girls Guide to Great Sex

by Sheila Wray Gregoire

why yes, you did read that right. i am reviewing a sex book this week. don’t worry, it’s not scandalous. it’s a Christian book written by a Christian writer, blogger and speaker, Sheila Gregoire. her blog (to love, honor and vacuum) is one of my favs.

often times when we are growing up (at least when i was) sex wasn’t discussed further than “don’t do it until you’re married”. which really leaves quite a few questions unanswered. this book will answer every. single. one. of those questions and more.

sheila herself said…”but good girls know that making sex great isn’t about acting trashy. it’s about recognizing what God really designed sex for, and then learning how to reap all these benefits and to joyfully enjoy your husband.”

if you are preparing for marriage, virgin or non-virgin, this book is for you. if you are a newlywed wife, this book is for you. and if you’ve been married for a little bit or a long bit, this book is for you. if your sex life seems ho hum and needs some spicing up, this book is also for you.

i understand that we live in an over-sexualized society and that basically everywhere we look it’s in our face. and i understand the need for discreetness, but at some point direct honesty is needed and helpful. this book is super straight forward. so if you’re looking for something that isn’t direct and beats around the bush, this book isn’t for you. she starts is out with how you think about, view and understand sex. after that she gets right to the nuts and bolts of it. i’m fairly sure this book would answer every single question a girl would have before she gets married. actually i’m positive it would answer every question. every single one.

this book has a super biblical approach and i love that about it. she doesn’t just say “don’t do it” or “this is okay to do”, she gives you reasoning and logic behind it. she tells you why the particular act is or is not acceptable in God’s eyes and then lets you make your own decision.

have you ever wondered what God’s view on certain things were, but had no idea who to ask without sounding like a freak? surely i’m not the only one. well, sheila answered them all in this book. lingerie? libido? role-playing? all of those, and much more, are answered in this book.

this is a great book that i would deffo recommend. it’s a fun, informative and easy read.

when love and submission ignite {book review}

When Love and Submission Ignite
By Apostle Ken O. Griffith
when i saw this book listed on the bookcrash site, i thought it sounded super interesting and couldn’t WAIT to read it.  i am trying to learn how to Biblically be a submissive wife, something i struggle with, and was really hoping this book would help with that.
the description on the back of the book reads:

Are you in a relationship? Are you single, married, divorced or separated? Are you longing for answers to overwhelming challenges? This book is for the individual longing for love and respect from his/her spouse. It’s for those seeking beautiful love in a biblical marriage. Your relationship may be falling off the cliff, you may be anxious, and anxiety may have led to serious consequences. I believe God is about to interrupt your life; the questions you’ve asked about marriage are answered in this Christian self-help book. As you read and meditate, allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you. God is a God of miracles. He understands relationships and knows you are in need of a miracle in your marriage today. Let’s explore the secrets to enjoy an incredible love relationship – you’ll be glad you did!

i had high expectations of this book, from reading the description.  and i really did want to enjoy it.  but sadly, i didn’t.
i felt that some of the chapters in this book went on with rambling that seemed like disjointed thoughts.  it didn’t seem each chapter began with one clear thought that was followed through till the end.  which really made some places confusing.
i also found some of the content to be offensive and the wording abrasive.  when you begin a paragraph with the sentence “listen up women”, it just doesn’t bode well with me.  for a strong willed woman like myself, teaching submission must be done in a loving way.
there was also a place in the book where the author spoke about couples that live near family members/parents.  he said that you must trust God to provide a home for you away from your parents.  and that couples must do that in order to become one.

there were some really well put together thoughts in the book.  the author is correct, submission IS a key part of marriage and definitely one that God intends us to all follow.  the overall idea of the book was a great one.  i just wish it would have been a little more well composed, meatier and would have delved into the topics more.

i received this book free from the publisher through the BookCrash.com book review program, which requires an honest, though not necessarily positive, review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

unglued devotional {book review}

Unglued Devotional
By Lysa Terkeurst

this 60 day devotional is for the woman who lets her emotions control her.  it gently guides you on how to make your emotions work for you rather than against you.  it’s so easy to come unglued when others irritate, disappoint, criticize or do other things that bump into our happy.  each day starts with scripture, a thought for the day, a 2 – 4 page devotional and ends with a prayer.

this devotional is to accompany the unglued book lysa wrote.  i haven’t read that book yet but am really thinking i should.  from reading the devotional, i’m thinking it can stand alone on it’s own and wouldn’t think it necessary to read the book first.

i really enjoyed this devotional.  the lessons were short, easy to read and easy to understand.  i was easily able to relate it to my life.  lysa is honest and speaks from experience, not candy coating her own trials or poor choices she made in allowing her emotions to control her.

lysa offers Biblical advice on dealing with naughty littles, trusting in God when we are fearful, being wronged by friends, disappointment, abrasive people, conflict and aching hearts.  there were so very many days that i could relate with every single word she was saying.  i am sure one mama that needs to learn how to control her emotions.

this book was provided to me free of charge by booksneeze.com in return for my honest review.
