prized! {book review}

Prized!
Your Journey as His Daughter
By Noelle Toscano

about the book:

Prized! Your Journey as His Daughter, is a fresh and inspiring new perspective on how to live for and love God in a dark world. The teenage years bring some of the most difficult experiences that life has to offer. However, it can also be an amazing time of growing spiritually and making decisions to be proud of. Prized! Your Journey as His Daughter, is filled with relatable stories, helpful tips, and the truth of God’s Word that will offer inspiration as you navigate the wonderful world of dating, making and maintaining healthy friendships, learning to understand and relate to parents, dealing with superficiality, and realizing your full potential as God’s beloved Child. Glorify God. Enjoy Him forever. It starts now.

i have to say, i was skeptical that this would be an easy read for me.  it’s advice for teenage girls and i am far from that.  i thought this was going to be one of those books that i struggle through and have to force myself to read.  boy, was i wrong!  who would have ever guessed that i would find so many tidbits of info in it that i could absolutely relate to my life?

i have a favorite section in it that i want to share with you.  those of you that read my blog daily will absolutely understand why this section resonated with me.  the bottom line is this: God has made me who i am.  i grow.  i change.  i regress.  i trip up.  i do well.  i excel.  i fail.  others see it and may pass judgement.  they may love me or hate me.  however they feel about me, good or bad, does not dictate who i am.  i absolutely love love love that.  i love it so much that i read it a few times.

throughout this book, noelle takes the reader back to a memory of her childhood and her teenage years.  wanting to be noticed, important and the center of attention but at the same time wanting to hide in the corner.  she recounts her emotions so successfully that our own gut-wrenching emotional memories begin to surface.  this allows us to place ourselves in our children’s place once again, and gives us the opportunity to evaluate the condition of their lives and relationships.

i adored this book and would definitely recommend it to a woman of any age!  this book is definitely one that every parent needs to add to their collections for their daughters. i feel it’s a perfect book for any soon to be teenager to read. and i will be passing it along to my little miss to read.

i received this book free from the publisher through the BookCrash.com book review program, which requires an honest, though not necessarily positive, review.  the opinions i have expressed are my own.

downside up {book review}

Downside Up
Transform Rejection Into Your Golden Opportunity
By Tracey Mitchell

the description on the back of the book reads:

A harsh reality of life is that it’s not always enjoyable. Everyone has experienced rejection. Whether in the form of hash words, unreciprocated love, loss or betrayal. Most people perceive rejection as a negative occurrence, when, in reality, rejection can be one of the most powerful tools in life.

Downside Up contains step-by-step guides, resources, and inter-active pages necessary to restore lost identity and transform dreams into reality. Downside Up offers wisdom, guidance, and personal application while also outlining and establishing key biblical principles that promote emotional and mental wellness.

we’ve all experienced it at one time or another, rejection.  whether it be from a spouse, a friend or even a parent.  rejection is never easy, ever.  and i would have never imagined something positive could come out of rejection until i read this book.

downside up shows us that there is a positive effect of getting rejected.  the problem is it’s hard for us to see it because our heart is so hurt.  God has a plan for our life.  and if there is someone i would love to plan my life, it’s certainly Him.  one thing that i realized throughout reading this book was there was a REASON for the rejection that you receive. it’s because that person or thing wasn’t right for your life at this point in time.

the end of every chapter in this book offers a list of principles gleaned from the chapter, a verse from the Bible, a quote and a plan of action that offers something for the reader to do to help them grow or heal from rejection.  i really liked this way of ending each chapter.
one section of this book that i especially found helpful was on negative self-talk.  that is something i’ve always had a problem with.  YOU are the person you spend the most time with.  as she said “a million compliments cannot cure negative self-talk”.   the way we talk to our self can create a paralyzing, irrational fear of rejection within us.

this book was provided to me free of charge by booksneeze.com in return for my honest review. the opinions i have expressed are my own.

not guilty {book review}

Not Guilty
By Teresa Pollard and Candi Pullen
the description on the back of the book reads:

It’s 1974 and Carrie Shepherd, daughter of the minister at Windspree Community Church, is a college senior with plans to be a missionary in Africa. Raped by a masked assailant, Carrie is so traumatized she tells no one until she realizes she’s pregnant. Refusing to have an abortion, she must find the courage to face her family, her fiance, her friends and a gossiping, angry congregation which may include her attacker.

i thought this was a well-written book. the trauma, emotions and events that happened feel very believable.  carrie’s world was shattered in an instant.  i did think that her parents reactions were a little less believable.  i know if my daughter was so severely upset everyday, i would push harder to find out what was bothering her.  carrie decided not to tell anyone about the rape even after finding out about the pregnancy, not wanting to deal with the shame. unfortunately, that was not a good decision.

if you’re looking for something a little different, Not Guilty is worth a read. i found it was a very easy, entertaining read.

i received this book free from the publisher through the BookCrash.com book review program, which requires an honest, though not necessarily positive, review.  the opinions i have expressed are my own.
