Project Inspired {Book Review}

Project Inspired: Tips and Tricks for Staying True to Who You Are
By Nicole Weider with Kristin Billerbeck
About the book:

Based on the Project Inspired website created by Nicole Weider—a model and actress who integrates her behind-the-scenes experiences with guides on modest fashion, beauty, and advice—teens ages 13 and up will discover positive ways they can uphold their values in today’s world.

Nicole Weider is on a mission: to help young girls avoid the traps that culture sets, which baits teens into thinking they must sacrifice their self-worth in order to be beautiful and popular. After experiencing the dark side of fame firsthand as a model, Nicole launched Project Inspired in 2010 (www.projectinspired.com), a website for teen girls that analyzes pop culture and explores ways girls can live in their authentic beauty.

In Project Inspired, Nicole shares tips for teen girls to stay true to themselves and how they were created to be, as well as how to dress modestly yet fashionably, make a positive difference in the world, and enjoy their teen years while staying true to their faith. With photographs, real behind-the-scenes stories from inside the fashion world, and an honest look at living a life that looks great on the outside and feels great on the inside, Project Inspired is a book teens will turn to time and time again.

I got this book for my daughter, who has been a part of the Project Inspired site for a while now and she loves it.  As soon as I saw this book, I knew she’d love it as well.  My girl is a teenager and is enthralled by all things fashion and beauty {thank you Pinterest}. She has been devouring it from cover to cover. It has ideas on how a Christian girl should dress, use makeup effectively and other ideas that interest young girls who are living for the Lord but still want to be attractive to others.

It’s a book truly geared towards teenagers. The book has numerous pictures scattered through out the book.  Nicole is on a mission to help girls find their identity in Christ and walk confidently with their peers. She has tips on clothes, makeup, modesty, friendship, dating, and much more. I found the tips to be at their level and yet Biblical and what I agree with as a parent.  I found parts of the book interesting; for instance I liked the section on acne help, nail tips, and on how to get more out of perfume.

I think Nicole is a great role model! She doesn’t shy away from tackling the tough topics such as broken hearts, depression, cutting and abusive relationships. This book has something for every girl.

This book was provided to me free of charge by Book Look in return for my honest review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Nicole Weider is a former model and actress who founded the online community Project Inspired, which focuses on helping girls find their inner beauty. Nicole is married to Eric, and lives in California with their son. Visit her online community at www.ProjectInspired.com.

Kristin Billerbeck is the author of numerous Christian novels, hitting the CBA bestseller list and winning the coveted ACFW Book of the Year in 2004 for What a Girl Wants and again in 2006 for With this Ring, I’m Confused. The Argument-Free Marriage {Book Review}

The Argument-Free Marriage
28 Days to Creating the Marriage You’ve Always Wanted with the Spouse You Already Have
By Fawn Weaver
About the book:

New York Times best-selling author Fawn Weaver challenges readers to declare peace in their marriages-and shows how it really can happen.

Is an argument-free marriage possible? Fawn Weaver’s answer is yes, absolutely, even when one or both partners are strong willed, independent, and opinionated. (She admits to being all three.) In this groundbreaking book, the best-selling author and award-winning marriage blogger asks readers to invest twenty-eight days in learning how to live together without bickering, blame, angry outbursts, or silent treatments.

Fawn begins with the startling premise that, contrary to popular opinion, conflict in marriage is not necessary or inevitable. Then she leads readers on a day-by-day journey toward a more peaceful and supportive relationship. Chapter by brief chapter, she offers fresh perspectives and practical strategies for communicating effectively, building understanding, and defusing anger while at the same time nurturing honesty, vulnerability, and mutual support.

I’m sure if I asked who wanted an argument free marriage, I’d see all sorts of hands going up…including my own!  I can speak for my own marriage, most of our arguments are over small things and when the argument is over, sometimes I even have trouble remembering why it even started.

Fawn says that she is outspoken, so for her, an argument free marriage may be a difficulty. Boy, can this outspoken girl relate to that!  One of the hardest things for me to do is keep my mouth shut and walk away from an argument.  I have this deep desire to always get the last word in, and to be right.  Not my most endearing qualities.

In the book, Fawn says that there are 3 things that are essential in creating an argument-free marriage, and that these can be replicated in any relationship one desire’s to last a lifetime (marriage, siblings, parents, children): Understand and obey the law of acceleration, Stick to the original emotion and Keep at the forefront of your mind this indisputable fact: that tomorrow may never come.

The author’s tips are basic—things we know but too often don’t follow: don’t go to bed angry, for instance.  Actually, this may be basic but it’s a pretty big one.  From my own experience, I can tell you when I’ve went to bed angry I just never sleep well that night.  The Bible even says in Ephesians 4:26 to not let the sun go down while you’re angry.

There were many pearls pf wisdom in this book. And Fawn has delivered in this book what she does with her website: disseminating encouraging messages about how marriages can thrive.

This book was provided to me free of charge by Book Look in return for my honest review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Fawn Weaver, a USA Today and New York Times and bestselling author, is an investor, marriage advocate, TEDx alum and the founder of the Happy Wives Club, a community of nearly 1,000,000 women in more than 110 countries.

The Club’s website, HappyWivesClub.com, is an upbeat blog dedicated to positively changing the tone about marriage. Twice named the Best Marriage Site on the web by About.com, HappyWivesClub.com is the go-to place for women wanting to read about the “sunny side” of marriage and get tips on taking a marriage from good to great and from great to extraordinary.

Anything {Book Review}

Anything
The Prayer That Unlocked My God and My Soul
By Jennie Allen
About the book:

What if you told God you would do anything . . . and he took you up on it?

In the years since the initial release of Anything, God continued to stretch Jennie Allen and her faith because of the courageous prayer of surrender that she and her husband, Zac, prayed, “God, we will do anything. Anything.” Previously caught in the dizzying haze of worldly happiness and empty pursuits, Jennie went on to begin living out the adventure God had written for them-to include becoming the founder of IF: Gathering, an organization to gather, equip, and unleash the next generation to live out their purpose.

Anything is a prayer of surrender that will spark something. A prayer that will move you to stop chasing things that just make you feel happy and start living a surrendered life that matters.

This newly revised edition is updated throughout to include a new introduction and an in-depth Bible study component for those who have been wanting to lead a study on this topic.

Join Jennie on an adventure to discover your anything, those things that actually mean nothing until you know the God truly worth giving it all up for. And when you do, that will change everything.

I’ve always felt like a bad prayer.  Who in the world has a problem praying? Certainly not anyone I’ve met…Our Pastor doesn’t, my Mama never did, no one ever did on the Waltons and even my littles don’t…but I’ve always felt as if I do.  And if asked to pray in a group, oh boy, Lord help us all.  It normally ends with the tears streaming, no one being able to understand a word I’m saying and me feeling like a fool.  With that said, any time I can review a book about prayer, I snatch it up in a hurry.

Anything – The Prayer That Unlocked My God And My Soul provides us with an intimate look at the spiritual journey Jennie Allen embarks on the day she realizes that the God she has heard about all of her life seems more plastic than real to her, and that she wants more.  Reading that captivated me.  I’ve grown up with the mindset that there are just some things you may kinda feel but you try hard not to think them, and you certainly never voice them.  Feeling as if God was more plastic than real was one of those things.  I’m going to be honest, that made me want to read on!

The book is an updated version of her first book with the same title. While her new book is similar, she writes about how her faith continued to grow and her relationship with God became deeper. She “let go, and let God” take over her life, for good. Her book is a prayer to surrender, a prayer to stop you from pursing a safe, boring life and start living the life God intended you to live.

Her search leads her to grapple with issues that most Christians would rather not think about… and ultimately, to pray with her husband a prayer of surrender and abandonment that will change their lives and the lives of those around them.

Jennie Allen does a wonderful job conveying biblical truth, explaining that our lives are not meant to be safe and comfortable, but radical and profound.

This book was provided to me free of charge by Book Look in return for my honest review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Jennie Allen is a passionate leader following God’s call on her life to catalyze this generation to live what they believe. She is the author of Restless and the Bible studies Stuck and Chase, and is the founder and visionary of IF: Gathering. Jennie is married to her best friend, Zac, and they have been blessed with four children.
